Six on Saturday 3-3-18, Spring Snowfall Puts a Damper on Spirits

SNOW

The room was suddenly rich and the great bay-window was
Spawning snow and pink roses against it
Soundlessly collateral and incompatible:
World is suddener than we fancy it.

World is crazier and more of it than we think,
Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion
A tangerine and spit the pips and feel
The drunkenness of things being various.

And the fire flames with a bubbling sound for world
Is more spiteful and gay than one supposes –
On the tongue on the eyes on the ears in the palms of one’s hands –
There is more than glass between the snow and the huge roses.

Yes, we’ve had another spring snowfall. This one was several inches and the snow is heavy, causing tree branches to bend to the ground.

I believe that our friends ‘cross the pond have experienced a similar dampening spring snowfall.

Dampening in terms of spirits, at least!

The Tail End of February Fools Us

Just when we thought is was safe to go into the garden, torrential rain changes to snow and blankets those fresh new shoots, crocus flowers, and snowdrops.

We often see snow in April, and rarely in May. Yet, we wake up shocked and dismayed that it has happened again.

By divine providence, I took photos before the snow, just because I happened to be outside on a warm sunny afternoon this week. Nice to enjoy the first flowers before the crushing snow, Oh, and the flu, too!

So, I proudly present to you the “before” snow pictures around the yard.

The crocus just begin to emerge near the stone edge of the flower border.

The snowdrops make their second appearance, after surviving an earlier snowfall.

A Buddha and a Heart Make Spring Snowfall Easier to Bear

The best things about February are Valentine’s Day and my birthday. My family treats me generously, I must say. While shopping, I stumbled upon this funny Buddha garden figurine, and couldn’t resist. Let’s call him Birthday Buddha. He and I have a lot in common.

It’s not just the weeds that get going in these early days, the herbs are pushing the limits, too. Chives are a favorite garnish, as their garlic flavor is subtle but distinguished. Fresh chives on new spring potatoes tastes so fresh. (Yes, I have a lot of clean up to do.)

Chives emerge in early spring, pushing up through last year’s debris.

Seeds to Sow

The light apparatus is ready, the heating coil assembled, and all awaits the actual seeding. I love planning and imagining the plants that I will grow.

It never quite turns out as I had envisioned. That’s why we keep garden journals!

I keep my seeds in sealed jars. I’ve had field mice chew through packages left out.
