I can honestly say that we’ve never had so many tomatoes before this year. It wasn’t soil or fertilizer, because I always just use compost. Maybe it was the warmth and regular (mostly) rainfall. The wire towers got so overwhelmed that they collapsed several times, and I ended up using my trusty wooden posts in addition to the wire tomato towers.
I spiffed up the mailbox garden (should I call it the postage stamp garden?) by painting the faded flag with red acrylic paint, and adding a river stone mulch. My cousin had a black river stone mulch in her garden, and that’s where I got the idea. See her beautiful garden here.
Even in the heat of August, I had trouble staying away from the home store. I picked up this new (to me) variety of Rudbeckia hirta. It’s called ‘Denver Daisy.’ It has much coarser and hairier leaves than the common variety. It’s also drought and deer resistant. Its blooms are very striking!
The border that the Rudbeckia grows in has a little “secret path” that makes it easier for me to get into the bed to weed.
The woods behind our house have thinned over the years, allowing wildflowers to move in. September is a wildflower extravaganza around here. These plants grow up to four feet tall.
I saw that another “Sixer” posted about growing goldenrod. There are a few little ones starting in the same area as above. I hope that we continue to get more. It’s funny, I used to think of them as weeds. Now, I think they are perfect for September.
I’ve discovered that my favorite flower color for the front of the house is white. It shows up best from the street. More color can come from non plant additions, like this blue ceramic pot.
