Summer gardens are thriving now.
We’ve had a relatively moderate season: plenty of rain and temperatures that were warm but not too hot.
All of that changed yesterday, as the thermometer climbed to 90°F (32.22°C) by ten o’clock in the morning.
Some people love summer heat, but I’m not one of them. I wither like a potted plant when the sun beats down and the moisture evaporates from the ground.
It becomes hibernation time.
As the summer garden enjoys the tropics (and the last of the bounty of rainfall), I admire it from the inside.

Zinnia Circus
The zinnias have survived without deer netting or spray deterrent. A friend suggested that zinnias are deer-proof, and she’s right. Of course, that didn’t stop one furry friend from testing out the blooms in a second flower bed. “Off with their heads!” so to speak.
Sage and Cucumber
The herbs and veggies are enjoying summertime, as well.
Summer Gardens Love Daylilies
Day lilies will really start blooming in July, but this ‘Chocolate” variety has already begun the show.
Aphrodite Sweetshrub (Calycanthus)
One of the best shows so far has been a one year-old sweetshrub that I sensibly protected with deer net. It has been sending out these beautiful cerise blooms on last year’s growth. The species is new to me.

Yes, we are having a bumper crop of cukes. I like to make refrigerator pickles with them, as long as they are picked when small.

Gorgeous Calycanthus flower ..! I dicovered this shrub a few years ago and I don’t have one here. ( Another in the wish-list ..)
